River Group to Build Clubhouse

The Pool and Yacht Club, Inc. is building a new clubhouse in Dakota County. Construction of the building will start with a cornerstone ceremony on the banks of the Mississippi River at Lilydale near the mouth of the Minnesota River. Its nautical theme will be borrowed from Ol' Man River.

At present, the club includes a kidney shaped swimming pool and dressing rooms, a cocktail lounge near the pool where meals are also served, and a stone terrace on the waterfront with a grill and boat docks.

This picturesque site was chosen by Mr. and Mrs. John Thompson for their home. It was the envy of many a boatman and river captain who passed by, until the flood of 1951. Rampaging waters almost carried the home away, prompting them to sell the property to a private club, so others could enjoy the beauty of the river.

Al Svensson of Golden Valley designed the building to achieve maximum scenic views of the Mississippi River. The building will stand 18 feet above ground with a large open-air deck cantilevered out from the main floor. Fronted with glass and facing the river will be the circular dining salon with a large ship's wheel as the central motif set in the ceiling. The cocktail lounge will feature a room shaped like the prow of a ship. A second, smaller dining room, to be called the Captain's Cabin, will be used for private parties and board meetings.

The Pool and Yacht Club held its grand opening of the NEW clubhouse on May 1, 1956.
